In general, Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics (HDMs) maintain, repair and overhaul heavy vehicles and industrial heavy equipment, both towed and self-propelled.

Maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment may include, but is not limited to:

         internal combustion engines and components, both stationary and mobile

         tracked equipment, commonly called crawler tractors

         ground engaging equipment and components, including rippers, ditchers, backhoes, trenchers and similar equipment

         equipment typically used in Road Construction, Mining, and Heavy Earthworks Construction

         towed earth moving equipment, commonly called scrapers

         self-propelled earth moving equipment, commonly called motor scrapers

In general, heavy equipment technicians:

         interpret work orders and technical manuals

         keep equipment cleaned, lubricated and maintained

         diagnose faults or malfunctions

         adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts, components or systems

         test repaired equipment for proper performance and ensure that the work done meets manufacturers' specifications and legislated regulations

         write service reports

 

Some examples of the specific type of equipment and specifications that Heavy Duty Mechanics are expected to maintain, diagnose, service, repair and overhaul are as follows:

  1. Haul Trucks  300 Ton Manufactured by:
    1. Caterpillar (Model Type 793)
    2. Komatsu Haul Trucks & Front End Loaders/Shovels (Model Type 930)
    3. Hitachi (300 Ton equivalent)
    4. Liebherr (300 Ton equivalent)

 

  1. Shovels  Manufactured by:
    1. Komatsu (Model Types PC 5500 & PC 8000)
    2. Demag (Model Type 740 & 765)
    3. O & K (Model RH 200)

 

  1. Dozers   Manufactured by:
    1. Caterpillar (Model Types D10 & D11)
    2. Komatsu (Model Types 375 & 475)

The Heavy Duty Mechanic (Off-Road) Trade is designated as a compulsory certification trade in the Province of Alberta. This means that tradesmen from outside Alberta must (a) complete a Qualification Certificate Application in order to have their prior work-experience assessed and verified by Alberta Apprenticeship before they are allowed to work in the trade in Alberta. The minimum months and hours of experience that must be verified within this Application is 6,750 hours of hands-on experience gained in no less than 54 months of experience.

(b) Once Alberta Apprenticeship has verified an applicants prior work-experience and issued a letter allowing them to work in Alberta in the trade, they must also successfully challenge the mandatory Alberta theory and practical examinations within the first 6 months of employment in Alberta.
